Publications

The Myanmar Medical Journal is the official and internationally recognized publication of the MMA. It is published quarterly and serves as one of the main forums for the publication of original research papers in the field of medicine in Myanmar. The journal also contains reviesws articles on topics of current interest for the practicing doctors.

The journal serves as a media for Continuing Medical Education especially for doctors serving in the districts. The Textbook of Internal Medicine (3rd edition) and The Textbook of Paediatrics have been published by MMA. These text books are all authored by Myanmar doctors with a strong local emphasis. Paediatric Bulletin, Surgical Journal, Medical Update, Orthopaedic Update, News of ENT, Update of GI & Liver, Newlook and numberous other publications appear annually, most of them being the proceedings of refresher courses, scientific meeting, workshops and seminars. These books may be purchased at the MMA office. 

SARANA Magazine has been  published monthly since July 2004 for the general public. Articles appeared in the magazine are mainly based on health, beauty and aesthetic issues. MMA Newsletter has been launched in July 2006 and published monthly.

Social and Sport Events

Social events included paying homage to elderly members of the association, offering robes to monks on the full moon day of Wazo and during Kahtein, celebrating Thingyan water festival, and holding dinners in honor of eminent visitors from abroad. Tournaments such as golf, billiard, tennis, badminton, jogging scrabble and chess are held biannually. All MMA members may take part.

Activities

Conference 

The Myanmar medical Conference is held for 7 days beginning from the third Wednesday of January annually. Every year it is attended by doctors from all over the country. Central Executive Committee adopted the policy to hold the conference in State and Division every alternate year to develop capacity building for branches. It is the main venue for the presentation scientific papers by members on all aspects of medicine. Clinical sessions and symposia are also included and eminent speakers from many countries also participate. Social events and sport feature prominently in the conference. The Medical Specialities Conference is held every two years in November. This is a more specialized conference where specialists in the field of internal medicine, paediatrics, radiology, pathology, preventive and social medicine participate.

The Surgeon’s Conference is held biannually and alternates with the Medical Specialities Conference. The surgical specialities are represented in this conference.
The conference (Eye, ENT, Radiology, Anaesthesia, Orthopaedics, Ob & Gyn, Pathology, Mental Health, GP, etc.) held their own program.

Workshop and Seminars 

These are also conducted by the MMA and some of them are sponsored by the speciality societies of MMA, UN agencies, and pharmaceutical firms. Topics covered are mainly in the areas of community health and primary health care. Some of the recent workshops and seminars have been on Family Planning, Breastfeeding, Reproductive Health, AIDS and STD management & Accident Prevention.

Refresher Courses 

Refresher courses in all branches of medicine are conducted by the Specialty Societies and are opened to all interested members. This is the main activity for Continuing Medical Education in this country. Over a dozen courses are offered every year and some are designed to meet the needs of General Practitioners, short courses on Emergency Management, Diagnostic Medical and Surgical Procedures, Research Methodology, and Family Medicine for General Practitioners is being introduced in the CME programme appreciated by Ministry of Health.

Clinical Meeting 

The various societies (Clinical Sciences) hold monthly clinical meetings throughout the year at the respective hospitals. All interested members may attend these meetings.

Guest lectures 

Visiting medical scientists from other countries also give lectures at the MMA. 

Activities in the community health care and preventive medicine

Every year the MMA, conducts specialists tours in which specialists representing various societies go out to rural areas where specialists care is not available to hold clinics. Health education talks for the public, lectures and demonstrations for local doctors and health personnel are something incorporated into these programme. MMA members have also taken part in Action Programmes in Primary Health Care being implemented by the Department of Health. These programmes are directly aimed at reducing infant and maternal mortality such as UCI, ARI, CDD, RH, HE, BFCI and MCH. MMA has also taken part in AIDS prevention work..

The Dr.San Baw prize for research 

Beginning from 1989, the Dr. San Baw Prize for Research, valued at kyats 10,000 has been bestowed to the most outstanding research paper among those submitted to the Selection Committee.
