Dengue positivity and Laboratory assessment of disease severity of paediatric appendicitis cases presenting with right iliac fossa pain, hospitalized in public children hospitals in Yangon

Abstract
Many surgical diseases and some medical diseases including dengue can present with right iliac fossa (RIF) pain in children. Treating such children by making right decision to select medical or surgical treatment requires rapid and accurate diagnosis. This can be done by assessing clinical, dengue serological and haematological features. This study was conducted to find out the applicability of basic laboratory tests in assessment of disease severity and dengue positivity of paediatric appendicitis cases. A cross-sectional study was conducted at surgical wards of Yangon Children Hospital and Yankin Children Hospital during August-October 2024 recruiting all children with acute RIF pain. There were 61 children with RIF pain, of which 36 children were eligible to participate in the study. Their mean age was 9.7 ± 2.1 years. Their clinical features were RIF pain (100%, n = 36/36), fever (58%, n = 21/36), vomiting (53%, n = 19/36) and constipation (11%, n = 4/36). Twenty out of 36 participants (56%) were treated success-fully by medication and sixteen (44%) by surgery. This study generated the information applicable in diagnosis of children with acute RIF pain including dengue, and assessment of the disease severity of appendicitis especially in resource limited hospital settings.
